FALMOUTH — Bertram Earl Davis, 94, of Falmouth, died Aug. 30, at Maine Veterans’ Home in South Paris.

He was born in Lynn, Mass., April 12, 1919, the son of Florence and Harry Davis. With his father in the Navy, the family traveled extensively. Davis followed in his father’s footsteps and enlisted in the Navy after leaving Santa Fe High School.

Davis had a 20-year career in the Navy with many notable experiences; most significant were the events of Dec. 7, 1941, in Pearl Harbor. He often shared his experience of that day with U.S. history students at Greely High School. His recollections are included in a compilation of stories titled, “Someone Talked! Personal Experiences of World War II,” printed in 1999, by the oral history class at Greely High School.

After his “quick 20” in the Navy, Davis embarked on a 35-year career in oceanographic research, working with Jacques Cousteau and his sons. He was a member of the Marine Society, the state representative for the Pearl Harbor Association, the Falmouth Fire Auxiliary, the Portland Amvets, the South Portland VFW and American Legion, Post No. 86, Gray.

Davis had a great love of reading. He used books to teach himself a number of things throughout his life that not only enriched him personally, but also furthered his career. He enjoyed music, woodworking, basket-making, caning chairs and being a rock hound.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Jo Davis, of Falmouth; his two children, “Jodi” and Dennis; three grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Margaret and Ruth; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Jeannie.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 5,  at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth. This will be preceded by a time of gathering and visitation beginning at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Pearl Harbor at a later date.
