PORTLAND — Bertel Edward Serfes Sr., 69, died April 11.
He was born in Yarmouth, formerly of Falmouth, a son of Louis and Mary Serfes. He was the youngest of five children and attended Falmouth schools. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1962, and after 2 1/2 tours in Vietnam, he was honorably discharged in 1970. Upon returning home, he joined the Portland Police Department and served six years until 1976.
He then relocated with his wife, Carmen Serfes, and their three children to Havelock, N.C., where he was a police officer for the Havelock Police Department until 1980.
He returned to Maine with his family and was employed at the South Windham Correctional facility as a corrections officer for three years. He then worked for the United States Postal Service his retirement.
He was predeceased by daughter, Mary Eloise Serfes.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Carmen; two children, Bertel Edward Serfes Jr. and Miriam Lee Serfes; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
There will be a celebration of life held at the Vineyard Christian Fellowship Church, 715 Bridgton Road, Westbrook on April 23, from 4-6 p.m.
