PORTLAND — Operators of the high-speed ferry known as The Cat announced today that they will no longer offer seasonal service between Maine and Nova Scotia.

Bay Ferries Ltd. has operated the ferry between Portland, Bar Harbor and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, since May 2006. Service by The Cat succeeded the Scotia Prince ferry, which ended 30 years of service in April 2005.

Bay Ferries  President Mark MacDonald said in an e-mailed announcement Friday that the service is not financially viable. MacDonald said the decision in part had to do with the Canadian government discontinuing financial support for the ferry.

The Cat was the primary user of Portland’s Ocean Gateway cruise ship terminal, which opened in the spring of 2008.
