BATH — A local partnership, Bath Trails, is lauding National Trails Day and the approaching summer on Saturday, June 7, with a five-mile hike along Whiskeag Trail.

Participants can park their vehicles at the Bath Area Family YMCA, 303 Centre St., at 9 a.m. and take the Bath Trolley until 9:45 a.m. to Thorne Head Preserve for the hike. The trail will lead back to the YMCA.

Bath Trails trail stewards will lead the hike, and local naturalists will offer lessons along the way.

Five years of hard work and dedication went into the creation of Whiskeag Trail. The efforts of the city, Bath Trails and the Kennebec Estuary Land Trust went into ensuring the trail would be located completely on public and protected land.

The trail connects two KELT preserves, Sewall Woods and Thorne Head, to the YMCA and the downtown business district.

Register by contacting Becky Kolak at 442-8400 or bkolak@kennebecestuary.org. Children must be accompanied by an adult, and leashed, well-behaved pets are allowed.

Bath Trails is a partnership of Bath government, area schools, nonprofit organizations, private businesses, individual hikers and bicycle riders. Log onto cityofbath.com/Bath-Trails for more information.
