BATH — The Bath Historical Society will present “Thomas W. Hyde – Antietam and Beyond: Ambition, Honor and Success,” an illustrated lecture by local historian Earle Warren, on Saturday, Oct. 20.
Raised in Bath, Hyde joined the 7th Maine Volunteer Regiment in April 1861 and fought in many key battles of the Civil War. He reached the rank of brevet brigadier general and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at Antietam, where three horses were shot from under him.
Hyde returned to Bath and bought the Bath Iron Foundry, which became the Hyde Windlass Co., a manufacturer of maritime machinery, as well as Bath Iron Works.
Warren has taught history at the Hyde School and spent many years at BIW and as a Maine Maritime Museum educator. The program starts at 10:30 a.m. in the Community Room at Patten Free Library, 33 Summer St. Doors open at 10 a.m., and light refreshments will be offered. Admission is free.
