BATH — Bath Iron Works will pay $355,000 in a settlement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to resolve alleged violations of a rule requiring companies to report use and release of toxic chemicals.
BIW violated the Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act by failing to submit toxic release inventory reports for chromium, copper, manganese, and nickel in 2013, 2014, and 2015, according to a July 17 EPA press release.
The shipyard also did not completely comply with all requirements stipulated by its stormwater permit, the EPA said. Under that permit, BIW had to minimize waste exposure from its shipbuilding process – including metal shavings and grit caused by sand blasting operations – so that those pollutants do not flow into the Kennebec River when it rains.
BIW is also now in compliance with its Clean Water Act discharge permit, according to the EPA.
