BATH — The Police Department is among the agencies bringing awareness to Elder Abuse Day on Wednesday, June 15.

Police Chief Mike Field said such abuse is not only physical, but can include neglect and financial exploitation. He noted that in Bath, 39 referrals were made to Adult Protective Services between June 2010 and May 2011; 27 required investigation.

Field noted that victims are often ashamed and afraid to request help, since the persons hurting them are frequently adult children, spouses, relatives or caretakers.

Field is a member of the Elder Abuse Task Force, which with the department is providing posters and public service announcements. He said people who suspect elder abuse should call their local law enforcement agency; Bath police can be reached at 443-5563.
