TOPSHAM — An 80-year-old Bath man was killed the evening of Oct. 25 in a head-on collision on the Route 196 bypass.

Raymond Lamarche apparently suffered a medical emergency, causing his vehicle to cross the center line and strike a 1998 Volvo wagon head-on at 5:45 p.m., according to a news release from the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office. The crash was witnessed by a sheriff’s deputy.

The driver of the Volvo, Phillip Pinkham, 67, was extricated from his car and taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland with injuries that were not considered life threatening.

Topsham emergency medical personnel performed CPR on Lamarche, and he was declared dead at the scene. His passenger, Barbara Johansen, 76, of Bath, also was taken to Maine Medical Center with injuries that were not life threatening.

The bypass was closed to traffic for several hours as the crash was cleared and police investigated.
