BATH — A Bath man was arrested Oct. 19 and charged with assaulting a 4-month-old child on several occasions.

Payson Martin, 20, was indicted last week by a Sagadahoc County grand jury on six counts of Class B aggravated assault, three counts of Class C assault of a child younger than 6 years old, and three counts of misdemeanor endangering the welfare of a child, Bath police Lt. Robert Savary said Tuesday.

Three counts were elevated to aggravated assault because of the extent of the injuries, Savary said.

The Maine Department of Health and Human Services notified Bath police in March of a suspected case of child abuse, and police worked with DHHS, medical staff, and state child abuse experts to investigate and determine whether abuse occurred, he said.

Martin was taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset, where he was being held on $25,000 bail. A court date was not immediately available.
