BATH — The U.S. Navy has awarded $620 million to Bath Iron Works for construction of an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer.
The award is a part of a multiyear procurement contract that runs from 2013-2017, according to an announcement from the offices of U.S. Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Angus King, I-Maine.
“This announcement is welcome news for the hardworking men and women of Bath Iron Works,” the senators said Monday in a press release. “The dedicated workforce of BIW deliver the highest quality ships for our nation’s sailors making them an invaluable asset to preserving our national security. With countless threats across the globe, it’s important that the Navy preserves its combat capabilities.”
Through the multiyear contract, the shipyard is to build five Arleigh Burke ships.
