BATH — Ward 3 City Councilor Carolyn Lockwood will step down at the end of the month to become director of Main Street Bath.

Lockwood is resigning to avoid a potential conflict of interest between her new job and her council duties, she said in an Aug. 8 letter to fellow councilors.

Her resignation is effective Aug. 31.

The council was scheduled to hold a special meeting Wednesday to appoint a temporary replacement for Lockwood, and to arrange for election of a new Ward 3 councilor when voters go to the polls on Nov. 4.

The new councilor would take office in December and serve out the remainder of Lockwood’s term, which expires in December 2015.

Lockwood, 47, of High Street, was elected to the council in 2012, narrowly defeating incumbent Kyle Rogers. She is the former director of the Bureau of Rehabilitation Services for the Maine Department of Labor, and also worked as the city’s community development coordinator. Before joining the council, she served on the Planning Board.

As director of Main Street Bath, Lockwood will be responsible for managing programs to preserve and promote the city’s historic downtown, much of which is within Ward 3.

She fills a position vacated last month by Jennifer Geiger, who left Main Street Bath after five years to do public relations work for the Maine Office of Tourism.

In her letter, Lockwood said she has enjoyed serving Bath as a councilor, and is looking forward to continuing service to the city in her new role.
