BATH — Contingent on approval from the City Council, Juli Millett of Topsham will be Bath’s next finance director, City Manager Bill Giroux said this week.

The council is scheduled to vote on Giroux’s recommendation on Wednesday, April 15.

Giroux said six of 24 applicants were interviewed by a team that included him, Assistant City Manager Paul Mateosian,  city auditor Roger Lebreux of Runyon Kersteen Ouellette and Joseph Cuetara of Moors & Cabot Investments, the city’s investment and bond advisers.

“Juli was the unanimous choice of the group to be offered the position,” Giroux said. “We felt she was the most qualified. She’s very experienced.”

Millett has worked in the University of Maine system in Bangor for a year as the assistant director of accounting. Prior to that she was employed by the Portland Press Herald / Maine Sunday Telegram, serving as accounting and budget manager, assistant controller and controller.

From 1986 to 1999 Millett worked with McDonald Page & Co.

“I think she’s going to be a good fit here,” Giroux said. “I think she’s going to work well with our management team and the City Council.”

Millett will replace Abbe Yacoben, who is leaving to serve as finance director in Freeport. Millett’s first day on the job is expected to be April 27.

Although the city is in the 2010 budget planning process, Giroux said the transition of finance directors has not been difficult.

“Abbe and I have really finished our portion of the budget,” he explained. “It’s ready to submit to City Council, even though they won’t receive it until early May. … Normally you’d be worried if you were switching finance directors this time of year, but Abbe’s done a great job getting the budget done early, so Juli can help us through the end of it, but I don’t think it’s a lot of pressure on her.”
