YARMOUTH — Barbara Speirs Pendleton, 74, of Yarmouth and Islesboro, died unexpectedly at her home on May 30.

She was born in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 24, 1934, the daughter of Douglas and Mary Speirs.

After graduating with honors from McKinley High School in 1953, she attended Strayer College.

She met her husband Bernard Pendleton while spending a summer on Islesboro. They lived in Washington, D.C. where they both worked for the United States General Accounting Office. In 1958, they moved to Islesboro to raise their family.

In 1984, they retired to Melbourne, Fla. After Bernard’s death in 1993, she returned to Maine to be closer to her daughters. She worked in the Yarmouth Middle School cafeteria where she made many friends and enjoyed the children.

Her hobbies included bird watching, reading, movies and spending time with her family. She will be remembered fondly and missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by two daughters, Donna Pendleton of Portland and Bonnie Pendleton of North Yarmouth; stepson Roger Pendleton of Bangor; three grandsons, Trevor, Brent and Gabe; two nephews, Kenneth and Carleton and a niece, Carli; and a great-grandson, Xavier.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., June 13 at Maple Grove Cemetery on Islesboro.
