BRUNSWICK — Barbara Lynn Hunter Cady, 85, died July 23 after a brief illness.

Born Aug 3, 1925, in New York City, she spent her youth in Larchmont, N.Y., and attended Wheaton College and Columbia University, where she earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in English literature.  

She worked in New York City for the Jewelry Industry Council as a fashion director and later taught English literature at the Kent School in Kent, Conn.  

For many years she lived in Farmington, Conn., where she was a board member of the Visiting Nurse Association, president of the Garden Club, and was an active member of the St. James Episcopal Church.  

In 1981 she and her family moved to Harpswell.  She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Brunswick, where she was active in the women’s group and served on several committees. Additionally she was a former board member and volunteer at the Pejepscot Historical Society and found great pleasure volunteering for The College Guild.

A student of music, she also appreciated fine art and wrote poetry.  She relished trips to the Metropolitan Opera and loved to travel, especially in Italy, Scotland and Ireland. She also loved Maine, having spent time on Casco Bay, Merrymeeting Bay and Monhegan Island.  

Her first husband, William Ramsay Stuart Hunter, with whom she had three children, Peter Jonathan Hunter, Audrey Lynn Scanlan and Courtney Stuart Cady, predeceased her in 1962.

In 1967 she married Francis Cowles Cady, with whom she had one child, Anne Holmes Cady Sturm, and they were married until his death in 1984.  

In addition to her children, she is survived by a brother, David Emery Lynn, Jr., of Stamford, Conn., and his wife, Sara Witcomb Lynn, a sister, Marjorie Lynn Holland of Lincoln, Mass.; five stepchildren; six nephews; and nine grandchildren, Emma Collette Scanlan, William Robert Scanlan, Emily Anderson Hunter, Alexandra Millay Hunter, Harriet Hunter Scanlan, Helen Cady Sturm, Hunter Lynn Cady, William James Cady and Jonathan David Cady.

Funeral services were scheduled for Friday, July 29, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 27 Pleasant St., Brunswick. There are no calling hours. A private burial will be held in Rye, N.Y. at the convenience of the family.
