PORTLAND — Barbara J. Fontaine Darling, 65, died Feb. 13 at Mercy Hospital surrounded by her family.

She was born in Portland on Jan. 28, 1947, to Herni O. and Irene “Sis” Mulkern Fontaine. She was one of 13 children. Darling attended St. Dominic’s Grammar School, King Middle School and Portland High School.

For several years she worked on the waterfront for a canning factory. She also worked as a bartender for the Spring Street Tavern.

Family was the most important part of her life. She raised five children and loved spending time with her four grandchildren. Darling enjoyed playing bingo, cards and traveling to Las Vegas and Foxwoods Casino. She also enjoyed trips to Florida and Canada. She always looked forward to spending her summers at the cottage on Peaks Island.

Darling was a former communicant of St. Dominic’s Church.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Anne Darling Mason; granddaughter, Courtney Elizabeth Hinks; brother, James R. Fontaine; and sister, Anne M. Grover.

Darling is survived by daughter Dawnmarie Darling of Portland; three sons, Paul C. Darling of Portland, Brian D. Darling of Portland and Mark M. Algara of Portland; four sisters, Roseanne Talbot of Portland, Mary Jeanne Sacco of Portland, Eileen Fontaine of Portland and Bernadette Gorman of Portland; six brothers, Robert Fontaine of Peoria, Ariz., Francis Fontaine of Biddeford, Henry Fontaine of South Portland, Thomas Fontaine of Portland, Joseph Fontaine of Portland and Paul Fontaine of Norway; grandchildren, Simon Algara of Cape Elizabeth, Cassidy J. Darling of Portland, Cameron P. Darling of Portland and Christopher M. Munson of Portland.

Visiting hours were held on Feb. 15 at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial on Feb. 16 at St. Patrick’s Church. Burial took place in Old Calvary Cemetery in South Portland.
