BRUNSWICK — Audrey Carrie Bruce, 85, of Maquoit Road, died Jan. 29 at her home.

She was born March 17, 1929, in Brunswick, the daughter of Herbert and Annie Cairns Wilson. She attended Brunswick schools, and married Way Bruce on June 7, 1947.

Audrey worked as a carhop at Ernie’s for two years while she raised her daughter, Marcia. She then held a seasonal farm job, and worked at Freeport Shoe as a marker until the company’s closing. Later, she was employed as a cafeteria worker by the Brunswick School Department, and finally as a packer at L.L. Bean Inc. until her retirement.

Bruce loved to garden and took special pride in her lawn. She and her husband often built and painted lawn ornaments. She also loved to bake and to knit mittens for her children each Christmas. She was a proud homemaker who always kept her house tidy, despite the demands of work outside the home.

Bruce was predeceased by her husband, two brothers and two sisters.

She is survived by a daughter, Marcia Hewett, of Brunswick; two sisters, Terry Dauphin and Anne Cunningham, both of Brunswick; two granddaughters, Lisa Richardson, of Brunswick, and Tracy Hewett-Hillman, of Harpswell; and three great-grandchildren, Jamie Lee Richardson, of Gorham, Brianné Richardson, of Bath, and Ryan Hillman, of Harpswell.

A funeral was held Feb. 4 at Stetson’s Funeral Home, in Brunswick, with the Rev. Ronald McLaughlin officiating. Burial beside her husband will take place in the spring, at Riverside Cemetery, Brunswick.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter, 383 U.S. Route 1, Suite 2C, Scarborough, ME 04074.
