FREEPORT — To help raise money for the Freeport Historical Society, Grammy award-winning pianist Paul Sullivan will perform a benefit concert at the Freeport Community Center.

Christina White, executive director of the Historical Society, said Sullivan is a soloist, member of a jazz trio and the Paul Winter Consort. She said Sullivan is thrilled to perform at the Spring Serenade March 20. The concert will be at the Freeport Community Center and will begin at 6 p.m. with a silent auction.

“It will be so special to hear him play at a venue this small,” she said. “The 100 people lucky enough to see this will not be disappointed.”

A silent auction will precede the concert.

“We wanted to tie in historical experiences and references to the prizes to make it a fitting auction,” she said. “There is a strong connection between the Freeport and the Historical Society .”

She said Tom Moser will donate a few hours of time in his shop. He and the winner can discuss woodworking projects or design elements. White said Freeport’s history is laden with woodworkers, from the ships built in South Freeport, to the buildings and farms in town.

Chris Tanguay, owner of a dry wall business in Yarmouth, will also spend time with the winner to consult or work on a stonewall feature or dry stone wall. Freeport’s landscape is dotted with these structures, White said.

Another auction item includes time spent with Robert Moody of the Portland Symphony Orchestra. White said Moody and the winner will meet at a Bull Moose Music store to pick out music together.

A more whimsical item, White said, will include a group reading by a psychic medium or a home psychic inspection.

“Tongue in cheek, we know there are haunted locations throughout town, and the spirits are alive in Freeport,” she said.

White said historic figures from Freeport’s past will be in attendance: The Arctic explorer, Donald MacMillan, Industrial Revolution era entrepreneur, E.B. Mallett, and John “Colby Jack” Coombs, who pitched for the former Philadelphia Athletics, Brooklyn Dodgers and Detroit Tigers.

“It will be fun,” she said. “We want to make this one ours. Between the experiences we will share and the items we have to offer, this will be a night to remember.”

There will be a cash bar and heavy hors d’oeurves. Tickets are $50 per person and can be purchased by calling 865-3170.
