2009 FALL MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR:

TIM MILLETT, Senior-Golf

* Class C individual state champion

* WMC all-star, first team

Tim Millett doesn’t like to share.

A year ago, Millett and Carrabec’s Shawn Keenan finished in a tie (each shot a 73) for the individual Class C golf crown. This season, Millett owned the spotlight by shooting a 71 to secure the title for himself.

That round was the crowning moment of a standout season which saw Millett consistently produce as one of the finest players in the state. With his senior season still to come, he’s in line for even more greatness.

He wasn’t just the best at the end of the season, he was stellar throughout, displayed solid fundamentals, made the shots he had to sink and inspired his teammates with his play. For all of that, Tim Millett is The Forecaster’s selection as North Yarmouth Academy’s 2009 Fall Male Athlete of the Year.

Millett, who lives in Auburn, started playing golf at age 11 and turned it up a notch in high school. He was the top player on the varsity team as a freshman, but didn’t have a strong round at the state meet. After turning up his intensity in practice (he plays at Martindale in the summer), Millett enjoyed a solid sophomore season with ended with his shared individual title.

This fall, his ultimate goal was obvious, but he was at his best even in one-sided regular season matches, going 10-2 in match play. He had the third-best 9-hole scoring average in the Western Maine Conference in the regular season (+1.57). After NYA came in third as a team at states, Millett returned to Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro and shot a 71 (his third under-par round of the season) to take the individual title.

Millett, who also plays left wing on the hockey team and midfield in lacrosse, wants to repeat on the golf course next season and lead his team to a title as well. He also wants to work on lowering his score. Then, he’ll look to play in college.

His final high school act might be one to remember, but Tim Millett, NYA’s 2009 Fall Male Athlete of the Year, will have a hard time following up this tremendous season.

2009 FALL FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR:

COURTNEY DUMONT, Senior-Soccer

* Western C Regional all-star

* WMC Class C all-star, first team
The transcendent high school soccer career of Courtney Dumont now belongs to the ages and to legend.

Dumont broke on to the scene as a tenacious, talented force with a flair for the dramatic and led NYA to thrilling regional final victories over Waynflete and eventually the Panthers’ fourth and fifth straight Class C championships as a freshman and sophomore. She didn’t let up as a junior and this fall, as a senior, Dumont brought the curtain down by scoring 26 goals, the fifth-most in the state.

Her team wasn’t able to win it all this year, but Dumont remained the focus of every opponent. She rose to the occasion time and again and won’t soon be forgotten for her greatness, attributes that influenced The Forecaster to select Courtney Dumont as North Yarmouth Academy’s 2009 Fall Female Athlete of the Year.

Dumont lives in Greene, but has happily made the commute to NYA since her freshman year. She started playing soccer in the fourth grade, but ran cross country in middle school. Luckily for the Panthers, she returned to soccer as a freshman and was a revelation. She had the overtime game-winners in both the regional and state finals as a sophomore and has earned all-star recognition throughout.

This year’s highlights included five goals in the opener against Gray-New Gloucester, three second half tallies in a decisive home win over Waynflete, three more at Traip, four goals at Fryeburg, four at Freeport and five in the regular season finale against Old Orchard Beach. Dumont added one more in a playoff loss to Waynflete.

The goals ranged from the impressive to the spectacular. She also had three assists on the year.

Dumont is also a star on the ice in the winter and on the lacrosse field in the spring. She considers hockey her top sport, but has grown very fond of lacrosse, enough so that she wants to play hockey and lacrosse in college, likely somewhere in New England at the D3 level.

The Panthers will continue to be a force on the pitch in future years, but it’s unlikely they’ll ever seen a four-year standout who scored clutch goals quite the way Courtney Dumont, NYA’s 2009 Fall Female Athlete of the Year, managed to do.

Coach Charles Fischman’s Comment: “Courtney had an excellent soccer career at NYA. I am glad that I had the opportunity to coach her this year. Although Courtney possesses significant talent, she did not try to get by on her ability alone. She also worked extremely hard in practice and on her own to improve her skills. As a team, we relied on her ability to score goals, but we also counted on her effort and willingness to throw herself into physical challenges. She was frequently marked very tightly by one and occasionally two players, but she often managed to find a way through the defense anyway.
