Photographer Mark Barnette exhibits two series of landscapes this month at Coffee by Design cafes in Portland. “The Smile of God,” including this view from a bridge in Springfield, Massachusetts, follows the Connecticut River through western New England. The exhibit title is supposedly a translation of an ancient name given to the region by native peoples, according to Barnette. “It’s an area filled with a lot of ghosts,” he says. The show opens at CBD’s branch at 620 Congress St. on March 6, during Portland’s First Friday Art Walk. Another Barnette show, “&Elswhere,” focuses on architecture and man-made structures, and is on display in the cafe at 67 India St. Both exhibits continue to April 5.
