HARPSWELL — Arthur Everett Litchfield, Jr., 77, died Sunday, Dec. 12, at Winship Green Nursing Home.

Born June 16, 1933, at the family home in Brunswick, he was a son of Arthur Everett Litchfield, Sr., and Gladys “Chick” Litchfield, and attended local schools.

In 1951 he enlisted in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C. and Fort Devens, Mass., and served in Korea and Japan. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant in 1955 with a Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, a National Defense Service Medal, a United Nations Service Medal, an overseas bar and a Good Conduct Medal.

On Jan. 22, 1955, he married Dorothy Golding, and had one son together. For nearly 45 years, he and his wife lived in Durham until moving to Harpswell in 2004.

After he graduated from Culinary Arts School in Lewiston in 1971, he spent 25 years as head chef at Opportunity Farm for Boys, where he was known for making 203 dozen donuts by hand for the yearly open house.

He played in a four-piece band and also enjoyed singing and playing guitar for half-way houses in the Portland area and for dances at the Farm.

After he retired in 1995, he started the Lenten Public Suppers at St. Charles Church in Brunswick, which raised money for six local charitable organizations, until his health started declining in 2003.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dorothy; his son Robert and his wife Marcia of West Burke, Vt.; a sister, Joan White of Brunswick; a granddaughter, Danae Rice and her husband, Loren, and grandsons Liam and Caleb Rice of Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan; and his foster son, Stephen Harris of Durham.

Visiting hours were held Wednesday, Dec. 15 at Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal St., Brunswick.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 16, at St. Charles Borromeo Church, McKeen St., Brunswick.
