YARMOUTH — Arthur C. Hansen, 77, died Sept. 5.

On May 24, 1923, he was born in Cumberland and graduated from Greely Institute.

He attended one year at Dana College before he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 and served as a B-24 and B-25 bomber flight instructor during World War II.  

After the war ended, he pursued a bachelor’s degree at Bates College and received his master’s degree from Columbia University Teachers College, where he met Roberta Gerdy, whom he married in 1953.     

For 20 years he served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves until his retirement as a captain in 1966.

A lifelong educator, he taught American history and government at North Yarmouth Academy for 41 years.

During his tenure at NYA, he was highly regarded as a teacher by both students and colleagues.

In his spare time he enjoyed building and restoring furniture.

He was devoted to his wife, who predeceased him, and dedicated to his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his brother, Glen Hansen; his four children, Evan, Carl, Diana and Terry Hansen; and his five grandchildren, Erika, Benjamin, Nicholas, Juliana and Thalia.

Memorial services were held last weekend.

Arrangements are by Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth.
