SOUTH PORTLAND — The 36th annual Art in the Park will be held Saturday, Aug. 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., followed by the Knightville Street Festival, taking place for the second year.

The Mill Creek Park festival will feature juried art and photography from 175 artists, adults and students. Cash prizes will be announced by Mayor Linda Cohen at the gazebo at noon, with a prize of $800 for Best in Show.

Student Art Tent will be open from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and six $30 student prizes will also be awarded at noon. 

A Kids in the Park area will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., where children will be able to paint and create fairy houses and wizard wands. Tracy Kane, author of the series, “The Fairy Houses Trilogy,” will also be reading aloud from two of her books at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Face painting will also be offered. 

Food vendors will be operating at the corner near Ocean Street and Broadway from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

Jim Gallant, Rob Schreiber’s Standard Issue and The Veayo Twins Trio band will perform live music.

Each year the Art in the Park Committee also awards a graduating student from South Portland High School a $1,000 scholarship, funded by founding member Arthur Hahn. This year, the award recipient is Maura Gaven.

Art in the Park will be followed by the second annual Knightville Street Festival, from 4-7 p.m. on Ocean Street between C and D streets.

Businesses in Knightville will offer food and entertainment, a sidewalk chalk contest, studio art exhibits, live music by Seagrass and The Substitutes and a show by the Yo-Yo People.

Jeannie Dunnigan, owner of Cia Cafe at 72 Ocean St., organized the inaugural event last year with Lisa Thompson, recreation coordinator for the Parks, Recreation and Waterfront Department.

Ocean Street between C and D streets will be closed to vehicles Saturday from 2-7:30 p.m.
