SOUTH PORTLAND — The Civil Service Commission will begin testing candidates for the South Portland Police Department in May.

There are two open positions in the department and more expected this year, according to a press release from Lt. Frank Clark. Nearly 20 officers are currently eligible for retirement, which could add more open positions.

Eligible candidates must be at least 20 years old on the date of the written exam, hold a high school diploma or high school graduate equivalent, and must submit to a background check, polygraph test, job performance assessment, and fitness and medical evaluations.

Applications are available in the Human Resources Department in City Hall, 25 Cottage Road, and must be submitted by 4 p.m. May 5. Applicant testing is scheduled for May 12.
