SOUTH PORTLAND — Firefighters and former firefighters from Portland and South Portland will be honored at the annual Memorial Sunday ceremony on Oct. 5 at noon.
The ceremony, organized by the Portland Veteran Firemen’s Association and Portland and South Portland fire departments, is at Forest City Cemetery, located 232 Lincoln St.
A procession of firefighters will be led by bag-pipers and the Portland Fire Department Pipe and Drum Band to the Portland Veteran Firemen’s Association lot and monument site. Members of the veterans’ association and both fire departments will speak, followed by a reading of the names of the 22 firefighters who died in the line of duty. The service will conclude with the laying of floral wreaths at the monument and prayers by fire department chaplains.
The annual service has been held at Forest City Cemetery since 1911. The monument was built in 1913.
