YARMOUTH — Annette B. Hertz, 86, died March 5 at Maine Medical Center in Portland. 

Born in Chicago on July 15, 1923, she was the daughter of Mack and Lillian Adler Orenstein.

On Aug. 12, 1945, she married Leroy J. Bieringer in Chicago. They moved to Hartsdale, N.Y. in 1957 where they raised their family. 

In 1968 she received her degree in occupational therapy from Columbia University and became the first occupational therapist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York City.

After Leroy’s death in 1983 she moved to Auburn to be near her family. 

On Dec. 28, 1989, she married Willard J. Hertz of Flint, Mich., and moved to Flint until he retired as a vice president of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation.

They moved to Yarmouth in October 1992.

A pianist who loved music and the theater, she also enjoyed reading, gardening, weaving, traveling and spending time with her family.

She is survived by husband Willard of Yarmouth; a brother, Herschel Orenstein of Indianpolis; her two sons and their wives, Steve and Jan Bieringer of Denver, Colo., and Garry and Mary Jane Bieringer of San Francisco, and a daughter and her husband, Shelley and Richard Rau of Turner; five grandchildren, Kelley Bieringer of Doha, Qatar; Katherine Bieringer and her partner Jason Johnson of Fremont, Calif.; Adrienne Rau, of Berlin, Mass.; Michael Bieringer of Los Angeles; and Lucas Rau of Middletown, N.Y.; and one great-grandchild, Alice Johnson of Fremont, Calif.; and her husband’s family, Willard’s  brother, Harlan Stone Hertz, and his wife Colette Gibbons of Westlake, Ohio; Willard’s son, Alan Hertz, and his wife Linda of London, England, Willard’s daughter and her husband, Miriam Hertz and Scott Milner, of Seeley Lake, Mont.; and three grandchildren, Emily Hertz of Newburyport, Mass., and Daniel and Sofia Hertz of London, England.

A memorial service is planned for a later date.
