SOUTH PORTLAND — Anna Virginia “Gigi” (Wise) Cross, 85, died at home on Nov. 10 surrounded by her loving family.

Born on Jan. 23, 1924 in Gardiner, she graduated from Gardiner High School and attended Gorham Normal School.

On Jan. 16, 1946, she married George L. Cross of Augusta, and they were happily married for 62 years until his death in 2008.

They lived in Boston, South Portland, and Waterville before they settled at their home at “920 Club” Sawyer Street in South Portland where they raised three children.

She was a wonderful homemaker, hosting family parties, cookouts around the pool, and the annual Christmas night open house where all were welcome.

A passion for dancing, she and her husband George spent many Saturday nights swing dancing and doing the Jitterbug at Island Park in Augusta.

She was predeceased by her loving husband George in June 2008, two sisters, Marion Colcord and Elizabeth Moody, and a brother, Frank “Bug” Wise.

Surviving are her three children, Mary Ellen Cross Nisbet and her husband David of Scarborough, G. Linwood Jr. and his wife Gail of South Portland, and Bill and his wife Janet of Scarborough; six grandchildren, Tarah Nisbet Beaupre and her husband Tim, Elizabeth Nisbet Tully and her husband Jeff, William Nisbet, Abby Cross, and Bryan Cross; great-grandchildren Camden and Ainsley Beaupre, Cooper, and expected great-granddaughter Tully; her sister, Eleanor Wise Dow of South Portland, and brother-in-law, Russell Cross of Northampton, Mass; and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were held last week. A private service will be held at a later date at the Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Augusta.

Arrangements are by Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland.
