CAPE ELIZABETH — Ann Maguerite Foley Bertsch, 90, formerly of Massachussetts, died May 21.

On Nov. 10, 1920, she was born in Newton, Mass., the daughter of Thomas Francis and Katherine Monica Tolan Foley, and was educated in local schools.

For many years she worked at the Burr School and the Auburndale Ladies Library in Aurburndale, Mass.

On May 5, 1943, she married her childhood sweetheart, Donald Bertsch. They enjoyed summers at their cottage in Brewster, Mass. Their shared enthusiasm for nature and wildlife led them to explore the back roads, nature trails and beaches of Cape Cod. They were married for 58 years until he died in 2002.

She enjoyed square dancing, gardening and trips to Bermuda. She began every morning with the The Boston Globe and Cape Cod Times, and would share her insights with family and friends.

For the past seven years, she lived at Village Crossings in Cape Elizabeth. Her family extends heartfelt thanks and appreciation for the kind and loving care the staff provided her, especially during the past few months. The family also thanks the staff and volunteers of Hospice of Southern Maine and HomePartners for their compassionate care and assistance.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her younger sister, Katherine “Kay” Foley Murphy.

Survivors include two children, Nancy K. Bertsch of Cambridge, Mass., and Donald Bertsch and his wife, Christine, of Scarborough; a granddaughter, Allison Bertsch, of Roslindale, Mass.; her niece, Kathleen Middlemiss of Conventry, R.I. and two nephews, Michael Murphy of Riverside, R.I. and Thomas J. Murphy of Saunderstown, R.I.

Visiting hours will be held at Hobbs Funeral Home, 671 U.S. Route 1, Scarborough, from 3 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 26. A private burial will be held this summer in Brewster, Mass.
