SOUTH PORTLAND — Ann Cleveland Richards, 79, died Sept. 24 at Mercy Hospital in Portland following a brief illness.

Born on May 22, 1931, in Honolulu, Hawaii, she was the daughter of Chauncey F. Cleveland and Mary Marpole Cleveland.

During World War II she attended school in British Columbia before returning to Honolulu and graduating from Punahou High School.

She also attended school at Colorado Women’s College in Denver, Colo.

In her early years she developed a lifelong love for golf while playing at the Oahu Country Club, and scored a hole-in-one in 1948.

For many years she was a member of Rhode Island Country Club, and played in several New England amateur tournaments.

In 1981 she moved to New Milford, Conn., where she became a member at the Candlewood Lake Club, and won the Women’s Club Championship in 1987.

After moving to Maine, she was a member at the Purpoodock Club in Cape Elizabeth from 1997-2000.

An avid gardener, she found great joy in the beauty of the natural world.

She cherished her time with her extended family and friends, and had a special love for animals.

She is lovingly remembered and survived by her husband of 56 years, Edward T. “Ted” Richards; their four children, two daughters, Kathy Johnson and Ken of Cape Elizabeth, and Heidi Leighton and Mark of Framingham, Mass., and two sons, Edward “Chip” Richards and Barbara Dupre of East Providence, R.I., and Dan Richards and Nan of Westport, Conn.; a sister-in-law, Pauline Cleveland, of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii; five nieces and nephews and their families.

A private service will be held at a later date in Providence, R.I.

Arrangements are by Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland.
