NORTH YARMOUTH — Amy Rice Scannell, 53, died Aug. 26 at home with her beloved children at her side after a seven-year battle with breast cancer

On March 11, 1956, she was born in Yellow Springs, Ohio.

As a child, she and her family moved to Newton, Mass., where she attended local schools.

In 1981, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Boston University School of Nursing.

She moved to Maine in 1982 and worked as an nurse at Mercy Hospital and later as a visiting nurse with Community Health Services until the birth of her children in 1989 and 1990.

A devoted mother, she put tremendous energy into her children’s education and activities, which provided her with great joy and satisfaction.

She loved the outdoors, and enjoyed yard work around her home, feeding and watching birds, and caring for her pets.

As an active member of the First Congregational Church in North Yarmouth, she often helped provide lunches for senior citizens.

Her other interests included hockey, and she was involved for a number of years with Casco Bay Youth Hockey and the development of the girls hockey program.

She is survived by her son, Gordon, and daughter, Emily; her parents, John and Hope Pobst of Barre, Mass.; her two sisters, Carol Pobst of Southbridge, Mass., and Megan Cunningham of Wellesley, Mass.; and extended family and friends.

There will be a memorial service at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, at the First Congregational Church, 3 Gray Road, North Yarmouth.
