SOUTH PORTLAND — A two-month effort to retrieve outstanding parking fines netted almost $9,500 for city coffers before it concluded last Thursday.
South Portland Deputy Finance Director Kristie Bradbury reported the amnesty period, which allowed for payment of outstanding parking tickets without other fees and charges, reduced a three-year balance on unpaid tickets from more than $94,000 to almost $85,000.
The amnesty program was created in advance of a new requirement that residents renewing vehicle registrations must not have any outstanding parking fines. Before the program began last Dec. 26, City Manager Jim Gailey said more amnesty periods may be offered in the future, pending council approval. None have been scheduled yet.
