SCARBOROUGH — Allen V. Smith, 78, died at home surrounded by his family March 6 after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

After attending South Portland schools, he served in the U.S. Navy and the Naval Reserves from 1951–1959.

On April 17, 1954, he married Edna Wilbur and together had two children, Sally and Allen.
 
After he worked at Portland Gas Light for many years until March 1989, he worked at Avis Car Rental in South Portland for 16 years.

He was past master of the Gov. William King Lodge and belonged to the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Number 4, among many clubs.

He enjoyed traveling with his wife in their Winnebago, spending winters in Florida, and square dancing with the Mix N’ Mingle group of Scarborough.

He was predeceased by his son Allen in 2002, and his brother Leon in 2001.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Edna Marie Smith; his sister, Ann Morong and her husband Frank; his daughter, Sally Petit and husband Robert of Scarborough; two grandsons, Robert Petit and his wife Erika of Jacksonville, Ark., and Jeffrey Petit and his wife Lisa of Saco; three great-grandsons, Sullivan, Alexander, and Cooper of Jacksonville, Ark; and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, March 11, at the Hobbs Funeral Home, 671 U.S. Route 1, Scarborough, with a funeral service to follow at 3 p.m.
