PORTLAND — A 34-year-old woman who reported to police earlier this week she was sexually assaulted around noon on the Back Cove trail has recanted her story.
Following an investigation into the report by Police Department detectives, the woman has acknowledged she was not sexually assaulted, Assistant Police Chief Vern Malloch said in a news release early Friday afternoon.
Police said Wednesday afternoon the woman reported she was sexually assaulted shortly after noon on the popular walking trail. Police were notified when the woman drove herself to the hospital.
Following the report, police amped up patrols of the Back Cove area, adding bicycle patrols and cautioning walkers in the area to carry a cellphone and walk in groups.
Police said Friday they are not certain of the woman’s motive in making the report. She has not been charged with any crime.
No further information was immediately available.
