The South Portland High School Jazz Ensemble 1 took first place at the Maine High School Instrumental Jazz Festival last weekend at the school. In addition, the SPHS Jazz Combo 1 also took first place in its category, and the SPHS Jazz Combo 2 took second place. Owen Doane, a junior trombone player at SPHS, along with sophomore flutist and vocalist, Liliana Brandão, won Outstanding Musicianship awards at the competition. More than 30 schools participated in the state competition, which was sponsored by the South Portland Music Boosters and the Maine Music Educators Association.
