SOUTH PORTLAND — Alice May Gauvin Cyr, 76, of South Portland, died Monday at her home.

Born in Caribou to Marie Anna “Diana” Gauvin Tuttle, she was a 1954 graduate of Our Lady of the Mountains Academy in Gorham, N.H.

She married John P.R. Cyr in 1955 and together they began a family, traveling extensively due to his military career. In 1966 they moved to South Portland.

Cyr is remembered as a kind and generous woman, a true friend who often opened her home and provided a place to live for friends. She babysat for many children in the area along with her own children and grandchildren.

She was an extremely talented knitter, making beautiful sweaters and mittens. She enjoyed traveling and visited many exotic locations.

Cyr worked as a dental assistant in Caribou and as a clerk for Pratt-Abbott Cleaners in South Portland. She finished her career as a proctor for Southern Maine Community College in South Portland.

She is survived by her husband, John of South Portland; a daughter, Wanda Pickering, and husband Joseph of South Portland; four sons, Bruce and his wife Ganya of Bangkok, Thailand, Kevin and partner Joel Waterhouse of Dayton, and Curt and Kent, both of South Portland; a brother, Daniel Tuttle and wife Patricia of Leesburg, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, Matthew Waterhouse of Florida, Emily Pickering of Portland, Austin Pickering of Enfield, Conn., Eliot Pickering of South Portland, Olivia Pickering of South Portland, John Paul Ronald Cyr II of Bangkok, Henry Cyr of South Portland, Franklin Cyr of South Portland, Nathaniel Cyr of Bangkok and Zachary Cyr of South Portland; sister-in-law Roxine Miller and husband Robert of Bangor; brother-in-laws Robert Cyr and wife Eleanor of South Portland, and Roy Cyr and wife Jessica of Bangor; and many nieces, nephews and godchildren.
