HARPSWELL — Alice F. Lawton, 89, of Harpswell, died July 13 at her home following a long illness.
She was born Sept. 8, 1923, in Trenton, N.J., a daughter of Frank B. and Caroline Fearnley. She grew up in the New Jersey communities of Hamilton and Seaside Park, and was educated in New Jersey schools.
Lawton worked as a bookkeeper in the Trenton and Princeton, N.J., area for many years.
She and her husband Donald bought a home in South Harpswell in 1954 where they spent summers for many years, moving there permanently in 1986 following their retirement.
Lawton was a longtime member of the Elijah Kellogg Church of Harpswell. She enjoyed antiquing, boating and spending time with her friends. In her younger years, Lawton also enjoyed tatting. She loved animals, both the wild animals in the area and pets in her home.
She was predeceased by her husband, Richard D. Lawton, who died in 2005.
Survivors include her sister, Ruth F. Harttraft, of Robbinsville, N.J.; nephews Gregory Harttraft, of Waretown, N.J., and Ronald Harttraft of Richboro, Pa.; grandnieces and nephews Heather Donovan, of Forked River, N.J., and Tyler, Justin and Danielle Harttraft, all of Richboro, Pa.
A graveside service was held July 20 at Hillcrest Cemetery, in Harpswell.
