PORTLAND — Democratic Sen. Justin Alfond, the current Senate President, turned back challenges from Green Independent candidate Asher Platts and Republican Peter Doyle to win his fourth, two-year term in the Maine Senate.

Alfond defeated Platts 9,118 to 2,504, with Doyle trailing with 2,013 votes on the race for the new state Senate District 27. The district covers the city peninsula, neighborhoods just beyond Back Cove and the Casco Bay Islands.
