Yarmouth — Alexander Wheeler Jr., 91, of Yarmouth, died of natural causes Dec. 23.
He was born to Alexander and Agnes Wheeler June 10, 1922, in Boston, Mass. He grew up in Boston and Manchester-by-the-Sea and attended Dexter School and Milton Academy. He received a bachelor’s from Harvard University in 1945. He served in the Army during World War II and was stationed in the Philippines.
Wheeler married Marianne Hatch in 1951 and settled in Dover, Mass. He worked as a trust real estate officer at the First National Bank of Boston, and served as an assessor for the towns of Dover and Sherborn, Mass. After his wife’s death in 1960, Wheeler married Alice Stetson Kelly in 1960 and Christina Binney Greer in 1974.
He was active in track and field and football at Harvard, and was a member of the Varsity and Owl Clubs. He served as secretary of the Eastern Dog Club and volunteered for Meals on Wheels. His interests included sailing and traveling, but first and foremost he was a devoted and much loved father and grandfather.
He was predeceased by his brother, William Wheeler; sister, Agnes Wheeler; daughter, Ellen Hayward Wheeler; and stepson, Robert Greer.
He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, James G. and Emlen Wheeler; two daughters, Frances Wheeler-Berta and husband, Matthew, of Camden, and Robin Bognuda and husband, Giulio; three stepchildren, Laura Moehrke, Christopher Greer and Susan Gildar; nieces and nephews, Lyn Anderson, Jake Wheeler, Bill Wheeler and Jonathan Wheeler, Seeley Kaplan, Lucy LeBert and Stephen LeBert; five grandchildren, Megan Kennedy, Hannah Berta, Clio Berta, Michelle Bognuda, and Narisorn Bognuda; and stepgrandchildren, Will and Sam Moehrke, Emily, Natalie and Holly Gildar, Robert, Timothy, Christina and Nicholas Greer, and Catherine, Christopher and Elizabeth Greer.
A private burial service was held Tuesday at the Highland Cemetery in Dover, Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Meals on Wheels in the donor’s community, or to www.mowaa.org.
