PORTLAND — Alexander L. George, 82, died at Maine Medical Center on July 8.

With his loving grandniece at his side, he spent his final moments enjoying Irish folklore.

On June 2, 1927, he was born in Portland, Ore., a son of Louis N. and Anna (Manos) George.

He served with the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, and with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Later, he worked as a merchant seaman for 17 years. In 1987, he retired after working for Logan and Sons Painting Co. for 20 years.

He was a life member of the Portland VFW Post Number 6859.

He enjoyed the study of Irish culture and his dog Sir Leko.

He was predeceased by his loving wife Margaret (Manchester) George in 2003; a brother, Constantine George; and a nephew, Michael Lee.

Surviving are two grandnieces, Patricia Lee and Kat Lee; and a great-grandnephew, Freddie Lee, all of Portland.

Memorial services were held earlier this week.

Arrangements are by Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State St., Portland.
