CHEBEAGUE ISLAND — Albert Salvatore “Al” Traina, 82, died Nov. 30 at Sedgewood Commons from complications of Parkinson’s disease.

On April 30, 1927, he was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of Salvatore and Giulia LaBarbara Traina, and attended local schools.

During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy.

In 1950 he graduated from Seton Hall University and went on to attend graduate school, earning his master’s degree in business administration from New York University in 1954.

He had a long career in magazine publishing, serving in executive positions for magazines such as Modern Bride Magazine, Bride & Home, Sports Afield, Town & Country, Harpers Bazaar, Ziff-Davis Magazine Network and with CBS. Later, he formed a magazine consulting and training company, Traina Associates, in New York City until he retired in 2000.

From 1979-1992 he was a member of the national board of directors of Goodwill Industries of America and served as chairman of the board from 1988-1992.

Active in Chebeague Island nonprofits, he was chairman of the board of of the Chebeague Island Library, president of the board of the Chebeague Recreation Center and served on the board of the Chebeague Island Historical Society.

A fierce competitor and athlete, he was a lifelong tennis and squash player and enjoyed running and bicycling.

He was a devoted family man who loved to cook.

He is survived by his wife Vail Devereux Traina; two children, Caroline Hawks, her husband Clayton, their children, Clayton Albert, Ross, and Eleanor of Bath; and Brooks Traina, his wife Lauri, their children Philip and Shaun of Windham; his brother, Edgar Traina and his wife Helen of New York City, and their children and grandchildren; and numerous cousins.

Memorial services were held last weekend.
