NORTH YARMOUTH — Albert Leonard Swanson Jr., 68, of North Yarmouth, died Nov. 3 at home with his wife by his side.
He was born Jan. 21, 1945, in St. Marys, Pa., the son of Mary and Albert Leonard Swanson. He enjoyed scouting and became an Eagle Scout. After graduating from high school he enlisted in the Navy, was trained as an electronics technician and was discharged from Brunswick Naval Air Station.
He married Ruth Elizabeth Clemons in 1968, and together they had six children.
Swanson was a dedicated employee, working at Bath Iron Works for 40 years.
He had a deep and abiding respect of the land and what it had to offer. He liked the outdoors, farming, gardening, hunting and all creatures great and small. Swanson had a talent for woodworking and loved the beauty of wood, especially cherry from the family farm in Pennsylvania. He enjoyed reading, mostly history and about the Civil War.
He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth Swanson, in 2004; his son, Richard Swanson; and a sister, Kathleen Jean Swanson.
He is survived by his wife, Sally Horton Swanson; four sons, David B. Swanson, and wife, Kathy, Albert L. Swanson III, Daniel B. Swanson, and wife, Andrea, and Andrew E. Swanson, and partner, Meagan; daughter Karen M. Davis, and husband, Greg; stepdaughter Mary Ann Cleland, and husband Jeff; stepson Mark Horton, and wife, Mary; a sister, Colleen Long; a brother, C. Fred Swanson; his aunt, Jean Mann; 16 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A time of gathering and visitation was held Nov. 8, at Lindquist Funeral Home, Yarmouth. A memorial service was held Nov. 9 at First Parish Congregational Church, Yarmouth with Rev. Kate Dalton officiating. A reception followed in the Fellowship Hall.
