PORTLAND — Alan Lloyd Sargent, 60, of Portland, died Feb. 7, at his residence after a brief illness.

Sargent was born in Portland on Jan. 7, 1954, a son of Leighton Burleigh Sargent Sr. and Helen Merle Sargent. He attended Portland schools and was a graduate of Deering High School, class of 1973.

He served in the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy where he was a cook on the destroyer USS DDG Barney.

He loved to cook. He enjoyed puttering around in the kitchen and watching cooking shows. He also enjoyed working with his hands where he demonstrated determination and patience in building small items. He had an exceptional memory, retained everything he heard and was knowledgeable on a variety of subjects. He had a very good sense of humor and enjoyed making people laugh.

He was predeceased by his father in 1961: his mother in 1977; his brother, Leighton B. Sargent Jr. in 2008; and his brother-in-law, Joseph F. Discatio in 2004.

He is survived by his three sisters, Judith A. Discatio, of Portland, Jane A. Baker and husband, Richard, of Portland, and Susan J. Bailey and husband, David, of Yarmouth; sister-in-law, Marjorie K. Sargent, of Cape Elizabeth; an aunt, Anna J. Freeman, of Cape Elizabeth; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours will be held noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 660 Brighton Ave., Portland. A memorial service will follow there at 1 p.m. with Rev. Philip Shearman officiating. Burial will be in Forest City Cemetery, South Portland, at a later date.
