Local all-stars honored in several sports

While it’s finally starting to feel like spring, we can’t let go of winter just yet.

So here comes a final tribute to the all-stars from local schools who have been recognized for all they brought to the court, ice, track, pool, slopes and trails beginning way back in November and extending into March.

Here’s a look at who earned all-star mention this winter.

Basketball
Basketball produced several standout teams and individuals this winter.
For the boys, in the Western Maine Conference, the Class B first-team included Falmouth junior Stefano Mancini, Freeport senior Jon Klages and Yarmouth senior Johnny Murphy.

Falmouth junior Sam Horning and Greely senior Chris Young and junior Trevor Tierney made the second team.

Falmouth junior Ryan Rogers, Freeport senior Cody Bartlett and Greely junior Sam Thompson were third team mentions.

North Yarmouth Academy senior Andrew Gendron made the Class C first team.

Falmouth’s Jack Wyman, Freeport’s Bartlett and Klages, Greely’s Young, NYA’s Gendron and Yarmouth’s Murphy and Andrew Totta were named WMC Senior All-Stars. Murphy had 21 points in leading his squad (coached by Greely’s Ken Marks) to a victory in the All-Star Game.

Klages, Young and Murphy earned a berth on the Class A/B West team for the Maine McDonald’s Senior All-Star Game. The West won 112-81. Klages and Young both had 13 points. Murphy added 11.

Klages was given the Bob Butler Award.

On the girls’ side, Falmouth senior Haley Jordan and Greely junior Abby Young made the WMC Class B first team.

Greely junior Karlee Biskup was named to the second team.

Falmouth senior Andrea Doyle and Greely junior Megan Grondin were third team selections.

NYA’s Kate Merrill was named to the Class C second team.

Doyle and Jordan were joined by teammate Kelsey Graffam at the WMC Senior All-Star Game. Freeport’s Kari Oransky and Kristen Poulin, NYA’s Merrill, and Yarmouth’s Michelle Moylan also took part. Jordan had 11 points to lead her team to victory.

At the Maine McDonald’s Senior All-Star Games, Falmouth’s Jordan helped the A/B West squad beat the East 66-51. She had six points in the game.
Falmouth’s Sara Bachman qualified for the state All-Academic team.

Hockey
The news on the ice was positive as well, for both boys’ and girls’ teams.
On the boys’ side, first-time Class B state champion Greely had several Class B West All-Stars.

Senior forward Jesse Shavel, senior defenseman Kevin Hart and sophomore goalie Matt Labbe made the first team.

Senior defenseman Jake Downey and freshman forward Brian Hart were chosen for the second team.

Senior forward Brian Allyn and senior defenseman Ryan Howland made the third team.

Senior forward Kyle Selig was an honorable mention. Yarmouth senior forward Jake Gallagher, junior goalie Ethan Gray and sophomore defenseman Ben Nickerson were also honorable mentions.

Brian Hart and Yarmouth freshman defenseman Max Grimm made the All-Rookie team.

Kevin Hart was named Defenseman of the Year.

Labbe was chosen Goalie of the Year.

Kevin Hart and Sean Eubanks of Cape Elizabeth shared Player of the Year honors.

Greely’s Barry Mothes was named Coach of the Year.

Greely’s Allyn, Downey, Kevin Hart, Peter Hoffman, Howland, Shavel and Selig were all chosen to be Senior All-Stars, coached by Mothes, along with Cape Elizabeth’s Jason Tremblay and Leavitt’s Ron Rouillard. Yarmouth’s Gallagher was also named to the team.

Falmouth had another stellar season and placed senior standout Mike Chase on the Senior All-Star team.

Chase was joined by teammates Dan Hanley (a junior forward), Matt MacDowell (a sophomore defenseman) and Jay Hurdman (a sophomore goalie) on the All-State West first team.

Chase was also a finalist for the Travis Roy Award (won by Richard Paradis of St. Dom’s).

For the girls, Greely forward Melanie Howland made the first team All-East region all-star team.

The second team included four Rangers (forwards Brittany Ames and Michaela Finnegan, goalie Sara McKersie and defenseman Becca Otley) along with Yarmouth defenseman Hanna Schuchert.

Greely’s Shannon Dellert and Yarmouth’s Kelley Kasper were honorable mentions.

Falmouth forwards Amber Aaskov and Megan Fortier made the second team All-West team.

Falmouth’s Brittany Harrison was an honorable mention.

Track
As always, local runners, throwers and jumpers excelled this winter.
The Western Maine Conference boys’ first team included Falmouth’s Kristopher Floridino (shot put), Dallin Thomas (pole vault) and Tom Winger (long jump, triple jump), and Greely’s Peter Colesworthy (55 hurdles), Nate Martin (200), Mark McCauley (800) and Logan Price (mile and two-mile).

The second team featured Falmouth’s Kellen MacDonald (55 hurdles and 400), Freeport’s Connor Yost (pole vault), NYA’s Sam Fear (high jump and shot put) and Henry Sterling (800, mile and two-mile), and Yarmouth’s Ebrahim Fazeli (55) and Jacob Whiting-Kooy (long jump).

On the girls’ side, Falmouth’s Rosemary Nurse (high jump) and Greely’s Hillary Cederna (200) and Hannah Werneth (shot put) made the first team.

Falmouth’s Ali McClellan (long jump), Adrienne Michalakis (55 and 200) and Jenna Serunian (shot put), along with Greely’s Meaghan Crowley (triple jump), Abby Diehl (55 hurdles and 200) and Liza LePage (800), were named to the second team.

Swimming
Local swimmers had a solid year. Several qualified for the Southern Maine Swim League All-Star team.

Greely’s Patrick Bowden (400 free relay) and NYA’s Ian Nichols (100 breaststroke, 200 free relay and 200 medley relay) made the boys’ Southwesterns All-Conference first team.

Bowden (100 breaststroke and 200 medley relay) along with Greely teammates John Madeira (200 individual medley), Ian Mecray (200 free relay) and Dan Spencer (400 free relay) qualified for the second team.
Bowden (IM), Madeira (backstroke) and Nichols (50 free) were on the third team.

Familiar names also showed up on the All-State squad.

Nichols qualified for the second team in the breaststroke and the medley and 200 free relays. He was also a third teamer in the 50 free.

For the girls, Falmouth standout Kristin Jackson made the first team Southwesterns in the 100 free, 100 breast, and the 200 medley and 400 free relays. She was joined by teammates Adrianne Madden (50 free, medley and 200 free relays) and Nicola Mancini (diving).

Falmouth’s Evelyn Perry (diving) and Greely’s Taylor Roach (400 free relay) and Sara Schad (200 free relay and 400 free relay) made the second team.

Schad (100 free) and Yarmouth’s Cathy Agro (100 butterfly) were third teamers.

Jackson also appeared on the All-State first team in the 200 free, fly and medley and 400 free relays. Madden made the first team in the 50 free and medley and 200 free relays.

Perry (diving) and Schad (400 free relay) made the second team.
Falmouth’s Kathryn Goffin, Jackson, Allison Rolfe and Kristen Stogsdill qualified for the All-State All-Academic team.

Skiing
In Alpine skiing, Falmouth’s Nick Bachman, Chris Moody, Weston Scott and Ben Weigel; Freeport’s Chris Milholland and Ryan Collet; Greely’s Luke Booth, Henri Schmid and William Lones; and Yarmouth’s Stephen Derrey, Lee Woodside, Sanders Wommack, Reed Wommack, Adam Sampson, Spencer Dorsett, Matt Gross and Patrick Vigue made the WMC All-Conference boys’ team.

Falmouth’s Casey Hilfrank; Freeport’s Monika Krahn and Sarah Pier; Greely’s Kelsey Ouellette and Catherine Ferguson; and Yarmouth’s Lauren Stackhouse, Natalie Aiken, Smythe Eddy, Claudia Lockwood and Taylor Horney were named to the girls’ squad.

In Nordic, Falmouth’s Eric D’Agostino; Greely’s Sam Humprhies, Connor Regan and Alex Thomas; and Yarmouth’s Casey Jones, Clark Shepard, Willie Walsh and Cam Woodworth made the Western Maine Conference boys’ team.

The girls’ team included Falmouth’s Sarah Abramson and Courtney Mazur; Freeport’s Lindsey Merrill, Melanie Ross and Molly Susla; Greely’s Tess Carley and Allison Hall; and Yarmouth’s Becca Bell, Margot Haines, Danielle Torres and Ali Totta.

Falmouth’s Mazur, Freeport’s Ross, Susla and Krista Bennatti-Roberts, Greely’s Carley and Thomas, NYA’s Sam Gray, and Yarmouth’s Haines and Jones qualified for the All-Academic team.
