SOUTH PORTLAND — A. Neal Lane, 101, died Aug. 25 at his home.
Born on Aug. 3, 1908, in Portland, he was the son of Merton and Ida May (Thompson) Lane.
He attended local schools and graduated from Portland High School.
In October, 1949, he married Martha Casey.
He worked as a foreman welder at Liberty Shipyard for five years before beginning his career as an aerial photographer. He was employed by the Jackson White Studio, and later by the Wendell White Studio in Portland for 30 years.
Working as an aerial photographer enabled him to own several planes throughout his life. He was also a former member of the Power Squadron.
After retirement, he went back to school to learn new skills, including how to work on small engines. He operated a successful small engine business out of his own home.
He was a member of Foreside Community Church, where he served as a Deacon.
Known for embracing life, he was a boating enthusiast, enjoyed motorcycles and traveling.
He was predeceased by four brothers, three sisters and a stepdaughter, Shirley Carey.
He is survived by his wife, Martha; a son, Robert M. Lane and his wife Lisa of Brownfield; a stepson, Donald M. Leonard of Williamsburg; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were held last week.
