SOUTH PORTLAND — Only three companies submitted bids to replace the Veterans Memorial Bridge.

Mark Latti of the Maine Department of Transportation said the lowest bid was submitted by Reed & Reed Construction, which said the project could be completed for $63.1 million.

Latti said the DOT needs to evaluate permitting issues associated with the project and finalize contract language before the project can be awarded. Soon after that, a construction schedule will be finalized.

The DOT will work with the company to design the new bridge, which is expected to incorporate safe access for bicycles and pedestrians.

State officials have said they hope to replace the 54-year-old bridge by 2012. The bridge carries 23,000 vehicles a day over the Fore River between Portland and South Portland.
