SOUTH PORTLAND — The South Portland, Portland and Cape Elizabeth police departments teamed up to fight drunk driving on the evening of Aug. 28.
Approximately 523 vehicles, traveling from Portland into South Portland on Route 77, were briefly stopped and contacted by officers at the checkpoint, according to the South Portland Police Department. About 30 drivers were detained briefly for further testing or evaluation. Seven drivers were administered “breath tests” and four were charged with operating under the influence.
Additional officers looked specifically for impaired drivers. Other officers from each department also staffed a sobriety checkpoint on the Casco Bay Bridge.
