SOUTH PORTLAND — Four candidates, including Planning Board Chairman Rob Schreiber and School Board Chairman Rick Carter, hope to be elected to complete the unexpired term of former District 1 City Councilor Tom Coward.

The deadline was Friday, Feb. 1, for candidates to file papers to get on the ballot for the March 12 special election. Joining Schreiber and Carter are Robert A. Foster III, who is a member of the Energy and Recycling Committee, and Michael R. Pock, a self-employed carpenter.

District 1 is in the eastern portion of the city, including the Willard Square and Ferry Beach neighborhoods. Coward resigned Dec. 31 after he was elected as a Cumberland County commissioner. His council term runs through November 2014.

Polls will be open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the South Portland Community Center, 21 Nelson Road. Registered voters from all districts in the city may vote in the special election.
