BATH — With their terms expiring this year, City Councilors Meadow Merrill, David Sinclair and Andrew Winglass have all decided not to seek re-election.

Nomination papers are available Friday, Aug. 1, and can be returned to the city clerk’s office from Aug. 19 to Sept. 16. Election Day is Nov. 4.

Winglass, who is completing his fourth term on the council, served two years as chairman and several years as vice chairman. The at-large councilor said in an email Monday that it has been “an enormous honor” to serve as a councilor, and that his decision not to seek a fifth term came after “considerable thought.”

“For me the time just feels right,” Winglass said. “I want to allow plenty of heads-up to anyone contemplating a run for this at-large seat. I know there are a number of residents who have shown interest in our city issues and my hope is that they will step up to the plate.”

Winglass added that he is considering new business ventures, and looks forward to spending more time with friends and family. He said he plans to remain on the Bath YMCA board of directors and remain active in the community.

Sinclair, who has represented Ward 6 for two terms and served a year as council chairman, is running for district attorney in state District 6, which includes Sagadahoc, Lincoln, Knox, and Waldo counties.

“It has been a huge honor to serve and represent the people of Bath for the last six years, and I hope to continue serving as our next DA,” he said Monday via email.

Merrill, who has served one term as city District 1 councilor, said via email Monday that she has enjoyed “an incredible three years of getting to know the volunteers and staff who serve this great city,” but is unable to run for a second term.

She said she hopes to purchase a small farm, after volunteering at one in Brunswick the past three years, and plans to spend more time with her family and working on her writing.

At least 1 School Board rep not running again

BATH — Three seats on the Regional School Unit 1 Board of Directors are on the ballot in November.

The District 1 post (Bath and Woolwich) now held by Jennifer Ritch-Smith of Woolwich; District 2 (Bath and West Bath), represented by David Barber of Bath, and District 3 (Arrowsic, Bath and Woolwich), held by Chairman Tim Harkins of Arrowsic, are all up for grabs.

Ritch-Smith, who said she intends to run again, was chosen to fill the seat vacated by Robin Buczkowski of Woolwich, who won an uncontested election last year, but was unable to complete her term.

Barber and Harkins have served on the RSU 1 board since its 2008 inception.

Barber said in an email Monday that he will not seek re-election, and that 10 years on school boards for RSU 1 and, before that, Bath, was enough. He did not seek re-election in 2011, but accepted the position after receiving the most write-in votes.

Harkins on Monday said he is undecided about running again. He was the only incumbent to submit papers for his seat in 2011.

Nomination papers will be available starting Aug. 11. They must be returned between Aug. 29 and 2 p.m. on Sept. 23.
