BRUNSWICK — Two men were shot at a party Sunday, Feb. 21, when one accidentally fired his handgun, police said.

According to Cmdr. Marc Hagan, the accident happened when a small group of people were drinking at 8 Guadalcanal Drive. Sometime after 8 p.m., a 29-year-old man from West Bath began showing a 9mm handgun to a 28-year-old Brunswick man.

He initially unloaded the gun’s chamber. But when the man reloaded the weapon, it fired a round, passing through his hand, and then through the leg of the 28-year-old from Brunswick, before lodging in a refrigerator.

Police and firefighters responded to a call at 8:57 p.m., and administered first aid until medical personnel arrived, Hagan said.

The man from West Bath was taken to Midcoast Hospital for treatment. The Brunswick resident was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland. Neither injury was considered life-threatening, Hagan said.

He said the investigation is continuing and the men’s names would not be released unless police seek charges.
