SOUTH PORTLAND — Two candidates will be on the Nov. 6 city ballot hoping to be elected to a three-year term representing City Council District 4.

The seat is being vacated by Mayor Linda Cohen.

April Caricchio of Cash Street and James H. Gilboy of Barnstable Road returned nomination papers by the Sept. 7 deadline.

Cohen, who served six years on the council, decided not to seek re-election. Gilboy previously served 13 years on the School Board until 2015, when he resigned because his wife took a job with the School Department.

Eben Rose, who served one term as the representative for Council District 3, also elected not to seek re-election. Misha C. Pride of Highland Avenue is running unopposed to succeed Rose.

Three seats on the School Board are also open, but only the incumbents turned in nominating petitions: Richard Matthews in District 3, Vice Chairman Matthew Perkins in District 4, and District 5 representative Elyse Tipton.

The general election is Nov. 6, with polls open at four locations: District 1 votes at the Boys and Girls Club at 169 Broadway, District 2 residents vote at American Legion Post 31 at 413 Broadway, District 3 and District 4 vote at the South Portland Community Center at 21 Nelson Road, and District 5 residents vote at the Redbank Community Center at Macarthur Circle West.

Residents can also vote absentee, in person, or have a ballot mailed when the official documents arrive at City Hall on Oct. 5. Ballots may be requested until Nov. 1, according to the city. 

The last day the city clerk’s office can receive mail-in voter registration cards is Oct. 16, after which residents may register in-person at the office at 25 Cottage Road or on Election Day at their polling place. Proof of residency and a valid form of identification are needed, City Clerk Emily Scully said.
